Consistency is the name of the game!

I do love how life/universe can intervene just when and how you need it to.  I’ve been facilitating a mastermind on John Maxwell’s book The 15 Invaluable Laws of Growth and one of those laws is Consistency.  And the chapter came up for discussion just when I needed it to.  I needed a kick in the butt to remind me that my daily habits make me.  And when I stop following them I get in the way of my success.

 

I headed the universes’ message and I read and re-read and pondered this Law/Value and then spent time doing thought work to truly see what is preventing me from living out Consistency.   

 

It did not take long to figure out  I need to do more work around this value.  That seems to be a theme for me with all the values I'm exploring  But the good news is I did make some headway and so I thought I’d get back to writing and share what I learned with you.

  1. Know What to Change - “Motivation gets you going, Discipline keeps you going.”  That’s from the book…I didn’t make that up.  But it’s so true!!!  I’m motivated all the time. That’s why I have a zillion projects going on and none of them close to finishing. I’m motivated to get started but not disciplined enough to keep going. So what do I do to change that?  The first thing, know what I need to change.  And my primary behavior trait I need to change is to let go of the need to have something perfect or know all the answers before I move forward.  Part of the growth journey is to make mistakes.  There is knowledge in those mistakes.  So instead of allowing the fear of not having all the answers get in my way I’m going to remind myself that the growth lies in the journey.

  2. Now How to Change - This one was a no brainer for me.  I need to stop taking on so much that I lose focus on what I should be doing consistently.  I know for me and my personality style that I enjoy being stimulated by many different projects and by big lofty goals.  But to truly be consistent I need to get back to the basics and develop daily habits that support my personal growth and development.  This means when I find my self bouncing from project to project or big idea to big idea I’m going to stop and remind myself to get back to the basis and focus on the small daily accomplishments that will lead to my overall growth and success.  There is no need to swing for the fences at every pitch!

  3. Value the Process - Sometimes my negative self talk on what I’ve not accomplished gets in the way of me moving forward.  To truly be consistent I must accept that I’m going to fail and that’s simply part of the journey.  It can’t be a stumbling block though.  I need to get back up and keep doing the things I know while lead to my growth and development.

  4. Be clear on my WHY - Oh lordy this one is a great one.  I have learned over time when I’m very clear on my why my success seems to come more naturally.  When I’m not clear it’s easy to get distracted and off track.  So taking the time to identify my immediate and long term benefits for personal growth is the key to staying consistent with my daily habits that will lead to my success.
